Microsoft has overhauled the visual aspect of Windows 10 along with pulling control panel details out and spreading them across the operating system for the last few updates. This update to Windows 10 sees more of the same with various new design elements appearing in the Settings app and other apps.
Many new Settings features have been added as well for people that like more control over their computing environment. These include advanced graphics settings and new pages of settings for sound, font control, and more. These changes to the operating system’s aesthetics only scrape the surface of the changes in store for you though.
Windows 10 April 2018 Update New Timeline Feature
The Timeline feature coming later today in the April 2018 Windows Update allows users to resume past work. This includes resuming where apps left off and doing so across multiple Windows devices. It also includes resuming apps in Windows 10 that you had open on Android and Apple devices such as Office 365 and the Microsoft Edge browser. You can resume work where you left off up to 30 days before.
Focus Assist Feature in Windows 10 April Update
The Focus Assist feature helps you keep your head in the game. It takes distractions out of play, such as social media, text messages, and phone calls. You can specify users that you would like to have the ability to interrupt you in case there is an emergency. There could also be an important call or message coming in; you can set Focus Assist to allow these to come in. You can even set certain individuals that you don’t want to put off on the allowed interruptions list.
When you finish your work session and turn off the Focus Assist feature, it gives you a summary of notifications, emails, and other updates that came through while you were busy. You know you shouldn’t check your email every time a new message hits your inbox, don’t you? Work needs to get done and happens best if you can get in the zone.
New Quick Pair Support for Bluetooth Devices in Windows 10
This new Windows 10 update also greatly improves Bluetooth connectivity with new Quick Pair support, which reduces pairing time with compatible devices. Android Oreo released a feature named Fast Pair that is quite similar.
File Sharing Feature with Near Share Introduced in Windows 10 April 2018 Update
Another much anticipated feature of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update is Near Share. Also called Nearby Sharing, this wireless file sharing feature similar to Apple’s Airdrop will make many Windows users very happy. Since the introduction of Airdrop nearly 7 years ago, iPhone, iPad and Macintosh computer users have had very easy access to this ad-hoc service to share files over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth that Windows users could only drool over.
Apple iTunes and Windows 10 S Inclusion
With Apple’s recent inclusion of their iTunes software into the Windows Store, their media center app is now available to Windows 10 S users. In a smart move by Microsoft, the Windows 10 S version has been scrapped in favor of including the limited operating system in regular Windows 10 as an alternative mode of operation. The S mode allows Windows users to restrict their computers to apps available in the Microsoft Store along with various other features.
